The American Psychiatric Association conducted their Healthy Minds Monthly Poll in 2024 and found that pets provide mental health benefits. The results were also similar to those of the previous year’s poll.

Pets Help People in Numerous Ways

When 2,200 adults were asked about their relationships with their pets, 84% of them said their animals have a mostly positive impact on their mental health.

Here are some of the other interesting stats gathered through the polling:

  • 65% of people said their pets offer them companionship
  • 65% of people said their pets are true friends
  • 64% of people said their pets provide them with unconditional love and support
  • 62% of people said pets provide a calming presence
  • 62% of people said pets help reduce stress and anxiety
  • 35% of people said pets encourage them to be physically active
  • 29% of people said pets add structure to their schedule
  • 19% of people said pets increase their social connections with others

Pets Bring New Concerns

Although pets can certainly help people in various ways, they can also cause people to worry. After all, when you care about your pet’s well-being, you want to do everything you can to keep them happy and healthy.

According to the poll, some of the main concerns that pet parents encounter include:

  • 76% of people said they were concerned about their pet aging or passing away
  • 67% of people said they worry about their pet’s health conditions
  • 67% of people said they worried about their pet’s care when traveling

For those who already share their homes with animals, this information probably does not come as a surprise. From helping you stay more active to simply being there for you when you get home from a long day at work, pets can bring joy to your life and reduce your stress.

For individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, or other mental health concerns, or who simply want companionship, pets can make a world of difference. And with so many animals, from dogs to pocket pets, up for adoption, it’s easy to find one who will provide comfort and love.
