Ready to De-Stress Bath Time for Your Dog?

I was raised to believe you shouldn’t bathe a dog because it would deplete the natural oils in their fur and dry out their skin. Back in the day, it was assumed that a dog’s ability to self-groom was sufficient to take care of whatever clean-up they might need.

Fast forward, and with dogs sleeping in our beds and snuggling on our sofas, we’re suddenly much more aware of the need to keep our pets well-groomed and yes, smelling fresher.

Aesthetics aside, bathing your dog not only allows you to check for ticks, sores, and lumps that shouldn’t be there, but a periodic scrub can also keep his skin and hair, healthy. With some breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, and West Highland Terriers (to name a few), a skin condition called Seborrhea can be common. Yes, just like with humans it’s down to an increased production of skin cells and/or skin oils.

When it’s the dry version, you get flaky, scaly skin cells (dandruff) caused by excess keratin production. When oily, you get a waxy substance comes from the sebaceous glands which causes your dog’s coat to look greasy.

Whether your pooch falls into the above category or he simply loves to dig, burrow, and roll in whatever he can when given the chance, cleaning him up is something you both deserve.

Now, according to the myriad TikTok videos out there, I’m not alone in dealing with a “zoomer” after bathtime. My dogs become downright fire-powered when they’re wet and will immediately race through the house to jump and roll on my bed, sofa, rugs. A brilliant solution to safeguarding your soft furnishings is this Geyecete Dog Drying Coat. Super-absorbent microfibres absorb moisture while the wrap-around design and Velcro-style tabs keep this dog dressing gown in place - regardless of his contortions.

And if you’re like me and swear by the leash-free parks for letting your pet work out at a pace that’s right for them, you may want to consider a quick brush down before bathing. Removing loose bits of dirt and debris makes soaping up and rinsing off a much easier process. But why waste time trying to brush out twigs and leaves when you can vacuum them out? Yes, this oneisall Dog Hair Vacuum & Dog Grooming Kit with three suction levels makes pre-bath clean-up a snap. And with a 1.5-litre dust collection cup, I could probably vacuum all three of my dogs in one sitting. Love it!

Now, it’s funny how most dogs love, love, LOVE swimming yet shut down when it’s bath time. My pooches are good as gold when it comes to bathing but I know they hate it and TBH, it bothers me when I see their bubbly personalities turn suddenly submissive. So, it must have been a dog owner who devised this Lick Lick Pad to instantly distract a stressed pooch from the task at hand. Suction design means it can attach to any flat surface in your bathing station. Food-grade silicone is perfect for loading up the lick pad with peanut butter or wet dog food and letting your little buddy lick his fave foods as you bathe him. Genius!

If there’s anything tougher than trying to clean your pet’s teeth, it’s cleaning their ears. Right? I have one floppy-eared dog that gets chronic ear infections, so staying on top of the cleaning is paramount in my house. And regardless of how sneaky I am at hiding the ear-cleaning fluid bottle from her - she knows and she hides. So, why stress your pet by pouring liquid into their ear when you can use these handy Vet's Best Ear Relief Finger Wipes to quickly swipe just inside the ear? While these disposable ear wipes are not going to take on an infection, the all-natural ingredients including witch hazel, aloe vera, and tea tree oil provide a gentle, easy way to clean, deodorize and refresh the inside flaps of your dog’s ears. A must-have addition to any dog bathing station.

It's a safe bet that every dog loves to be brushed and when it’s his pet parent on the other end of the dog brush, it’s a perfect opportunity to bond. So, why not extend this positive interaction to the bath period with this Comotech Dog Bathing Brush? Load it up with the dog shampoo of your choice, then begin to brush your pet as you wash him down. Soft silicone bristles with a squeezable design mean this dog shampoo brush dispenses soap when and where you want it. He gets an invigorating brushing and you get a clean pup. Best of all, you’re not trying to keep a wet pooch in the tub as you fumble with a dog shampoo bottle. Win-win!

For those of us who incorporate a leash-free park into our daily doggy jaunts, bathing isn’t something we would do after each visit. But a good brushing to remove any collected debris should be. That’s where this pair of Pecute Pet Grooming Gloves steps in to keep the process quick yet efficient. Worn just like a regular glove, these soft silicone brushing gloves make it easy to effectively wipe down your pet in just minutes. Over 3,000 soft massaging brush heads quickly grip and remove debris. And the pliable design makes it easy to work around legs, chins, bellies, and beaks.

These products are a great intro into how you can pivot dog bath time away from being a stressful event and into something that’s a little more bonding for you and your pooch.
