Cat parents and researchers alike often wonder what goes on in the minds of felines, and it can be hard to figure out what they’re feeling. Well, scientists have found a new way to record the electrical activity of a cat’s brain while they are awake, and they used adorable crocheted caps to do it.

Using Crocheted Hats to Analyze a Cat’s Brain Activity

For the first time ever, scientists were able to record brain activity on awake, rather than sedated, cats using crocheted wool caps that are made to fit on a kitty’s head and hold electrodes in place.

The goal is to study a cat’s pain receptors. Since kitties usually rip the electrodes off their heads when being studied, the crocheted caps can make a big difference. These little hats help ensure the research, which uses the painless electroencephalogram (EEG), is possible in awake cats.

Searching for Ways to Relieve Pain in Cats

Researchers are using this method to study chronic pain in kitties, in the hopes that they can find new ways of treating it. Why is this so important? Roughly 25% of adult cats deal with pain caused by osteoarthritis, and pet parents are aware of how well felines can hide their symptoms.

Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is a condition that progresses over time, so as a cat gets older, their pain can worsen. Currently, the treatments for osteoarthritis in cats are limited, and they can also cause side effects. That’s why Aude Castel and fellow researchers at the University of Montreal in Canada are hoping to find new ways to treat pain in cats.

The non-invasive method of using crocheted hats for EEGs on awake kitties lets researchers view how a cat’s brain responds to pain and stimulation, and this can shed more light on treatments and their effectiveness.
