World’s “Ugliest” Dog is a Real Cutie

Things got pretty ugly in California’s world-renowned wine region this month. Actually, things have been getting pretty ugly in the picture-perfect town of Petaluma for over 50 years now. And it has nothing to do with a bad vintage.

You see, the town is home to the highly popular “World’s Ugliest Dog” competition. And once this year’s event kicked into full gear, it didn’t take long for the judges to pare the pickings down to just eight lovable yet peculiar-looking finalists.

Now, this unique contest runs during the Sonoma-Marin Fair and dates back to 1971 when it was introduced as a tongue-in-cheek means to raise funds for a local charity. Registrants paid a small entry fee and then brought forth their homely pooch for judging. Prizes were nominal and it was all in the spirit of whacky good humor.

Fast forward, and this fun-loving event has now gained a seriously amped-up appeal. Judges range from an NBC news correspondent to a state official, a local journalist and even a retired area prosecutor – so no shenanigans happening here! Yes, pomp, pageantry and excited yips (from both dogs and owners) are all part of this prestigious contest.

Cue the drum roll as we reveal this year’s winner of the coveted World’s Ugliest Dog title. It’s eight-year-old Pekingese, Wild Thang who travelled with mom, all the way down the west coast from Oregon.

perseverance (this was his 5th competition with no prior win), paid off and earned his owner a cool $5,000 and a spot on NBC’s Today Show. So, congrats go out to Wild Thang for finally moving from dread “always a bridesmaid” status to that of top dog.

But who are the also-rans who weren’t quite ugly enough to earn the actual title?

Say hello to first-time contender Rome, a 14-year-old wheelchair-bound Pug who lives at a nearby sanctuary for seniors called The Pug Hotel. Renowned for being up for anything, this pooch is known to sleep with one eye open, just in case food, fun or frolics are about to happen. And because online fans of this annual event are also eligible to vote for that one special dog that tugs at the heartstrings – AKA the People’s Choice category – Rome went home with a little more than second-place status.

Then there’s senior, Daisy Mae who, at 14 years is another oldie but goodie. Toothless, almost blind and losing her hair, this winsome pooch began life as a street dog before being rescued a dozen years ago by a family who thinks her beautiful personality trumps that rough-looking exterior.

Now organizers quickly point out that this contest isn’t about mocking ugly dogs. It’s about having fun with these truly unique and wonderful characters and showcasing the side that might not be visible at first glance. Also, the importance of adopting all animals, not just the cute and cuddly.

As dog lovers, we’re all familiar with the Westminster Dog Show and the perfectly groomed and well-trained dogs that it introduces to the world. But in Petaluma, California, a different group of pups is being shown the spotlight… This city in the San Francisco Bay Area is home to the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.Hosted as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, this show celebrates the unique qualities that make every dog special, even if they don’t fit the traditional definition of “beauty.” For nearly 50 years, this one-of-a-kind contest has brought together dogs of all sizes, backgrounds, breeds, and ways of life. While they may have little quirks that make them an individual, like crossed eyes, underbites, mismatched ears, or abnormal stances, these pups quickly capture the hearts of everyone they meet.This year, the contest was held on June 23rd. The judging panel featured some big names, including Miss California Catherine Liang and Gaudi Schwartz, co-host of NBC news Stay Tuned. After viewing all the contestants, including paperwork confirming they are healthy (despite their unique features), the title was awarded to a Chinese Crested named Scooter.

Was the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest Rigged?

This year’s winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog title is a Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha. But we think she’s way too cute and think the contest was rigged! Judges recently named a 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha the World’s Ugliest Dog at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California, beating out several Chinese Cresteds who typically take top honors. The judges found Martha, who had been neglected to the point that she was blind before she was rescued and given her sight back through surgeries, delightful, if not a bit flatulent, in the process. These Dog Toys Prove That Ugly Is The New Adorable Veteran judge Brian Sobel says that he looks for unique dogs, and while the three-year-old sweetheart is definitely that with her jowls-for-miles smile, in a contest of ugly dogs, I have to go out on a limb and say I believe that the winner should be, well… the ugliest. Martha’s mama, Jessica Burkard of Penngrove, California, adores Martha and her gentle giant spirit and she does seem like a sweet gal. But seriously… Not all dogs catch the pretty stick, if you know what I mean, and this was a contest for them! Take this gal for example…This 6 1/2-year-old Blue Factor Brussels Griffon is named Monkey. I’m thinking she’s more like a mini-Chewbacca. A mean-muggin’ mini-Chewbacca, that is!

Meet Sweepee Rambo, The 2016 World’s Ugliest Dog

What she lacks in beauty, she makes up for in heart. Meet Sweepee Rambo the new “World’s Ugliest Dog”. At the ripe old age of 17, Sweepee Rambo is basking in her newfound fame. The Chihuahua/Chinese Crested mix was crowned the 2016 “World’s Ugliest Dog” last weekend at the Sonoma-Marina County Fair in Petaluma, California. Weighing in at just 4 pounds, Sweepee is blind, hairless (save for the grey tufts sprouting from her head) and covered in freckles with a perpetually wagging tongue. But don’t feel too sorry for Sweepee being crowned with such a seemingly ignominious title — she’s already an instant celebrity, having made an appearance on the Today Show (which will likely be the first of many TV appearances!) and is loved to pieces by her owner. In fact, that’s the entire point of the annual World’s Ugliest Dog competition — to showcase dogs that may not be conventionally cute and demonstrate that all dogs are lovable, adoptable and worthy of amazing furever homes, despite any so-called imperfections. And you don’t have to tell that to Sweepee Rambo’s proud owner, Jason Wurtz — she’s always been top dog in his eyes. “I’ve had girlfriends over the years and they were jealous of her and like I told them, she was here when you came and she’ll be here when you leave, that’s the best friend I have,” Wurtz told TODAY. She has even ridden to work with Wurtz on his motorcycle every day for the past 17 years — talk about bad to the bone! So congratulations, Sweepee Rambo! Forget Trump vs. Clinton — this is where the real action’s at. Make your voice heard by voting for the 2016 World’s Ugliest Dog. Mark your calendars, folks. On June 24, the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog contest will be crowned at the Sonoma Marin Fair in Petaluma, California — and you can vote! And if you live in the Petaluma area, you can even enter your own “ugly” pooch in the contest. Past winners of coveted crown include Walle, a basset hound/boxer mix, Peanut, a tiny chihuahua with a history of abuse and last year’s winner, Quasimodo, a short-spined mixed breed. The grand prize includes a massive trophy and $1,500 cash – not too shabby! There is also a Spirit Award for the dog and owner who have overcome obstacles or giving back to their community in a meaningful way. Former World’s Ugliest Dog Wins 2016 Heroic Hounds Award

Coming out of retirement, Mugly the Chinese Crested dog makes a triumphant return and has won the 2016 Heroic Hounds award at the National Pet Show in London. Never let appearance hold you back from helping others. That’s the motto that Mugly carries with him wherever he goes. Starting off life abandoned by a breeder a three days old, the 2012 World’s Ugliest Dog champ has gone on to inspire and teach about the true meaning of beauty. Mugly, a 12-year-old Chinese Crested, worked for Therapy Dogs Nationwide as a therapy dog. He helped children learn to read and visited adults with physical disabilities and learning challenges. And even though he’s off of the ugly pageant circuit, Mugly’s contributions are center stage, which is why he won the 2016 Heroic Hounds award at the National Pet Show in London. His adoptive mom, Bev Nicolson, couldn’t be prouder of Mugly. She says that the hairless pooch can sense when someone is upset and will comfort them, and he’ll remain completely still when curious humans want to touch him. “He is just so sensitive and for a little dog that is up against it in the looks department he really makes up for it with his personality and sensitivity,” says Nicholson said last month. “People fall in love with him as soon as they meet him.” Way to keep inspiring others, Mugly! A Pennsylvania Dog Shocked Its Owners After Eating $4000 in Cash

A Pittsburg couple was shocked to discover that their dog Cecil decided to have the most expensive snack of his life, after wolfing down $4,000 in cash. According to Cecil’s owners, Clayton and Carrie Law, the seven-year-old goldendoodle is a well-behaved boy who has never really done anything bad before. The couple had withdrawn cash to do a home improvement project, but Cecil had other plans for the envelope full of money. Less than 30 minutes later, Cecil was caught devouring thousands of dollars. “I walked back into the room and then all this cash was on the ground. He’s just like this, standing there, and I’m like oh my gosh, he ate some of this money and was in shock. I yelled to Carrie ‘He ate the money, he ate the $4,000,’” said Clayton Law to CBS News. After the initial shock, the couple discovered that Cecil ate a lot of the bills, but that some were still on the floor, albeit torn up and chewed into pieces. Carrie and Clayton describe their pooch as laid back, weird, funny, and almost human-like, and say that he is typically more of a snuggly couch potato. “He doesn’t do many dog things, he doesn’t chew furniture or clothing, that’s why we were extra shocked when he decided to do this,” said Clayton Law. “He has never in his life tried to get anything from the counter, even coffee table. We could leave dinner and go to the kitchen and grab wine, and he would not touch the food, and he just doesn’t care. He just took this opportunity and ran with it,” said Carrie Law. Once the initial shock passed, the couple contacted their vet to see if the dog needed any treatment. Given the goldendoodle’s size, there was no risk of bowel obstruction and he only needed to be monitored at home. At first, Cecil seemed fine, but in the middle of the night, the Laws were awoken by the sound every dog owner knows - the retching of their dog about to vomit. “When you hear that, you immediately just react, so I jumped out of bed and just made sure that he didn’t throw up anywhere,” said Clayton. “And then I went to pick it up… and I realized there’s a lot of like half eaten and $100 bills and $50 bills here.”That night marked the start of the Law’s unfortunate mission of sifting through their dog’s vomit and poop in an attempt to recover some of their money. Luckily, the couple was able to piece together most of the bills after carefully washing and sorting all the pieces back together. “There we are at the utility sink washing this shitty money, yelling ‘Yay! Yes! We got one!’ It smelled so bad,” Carries confessed. After piecing together as many bills as they could salvage, the couple managed to recoup $3,550. According to Carrie, the bank was really nice about it and told them that these things happen all the time. “They said it actually happens quite a bit because money just picks up so many scents, especially if it’s used in the food industry. The best approach to influencing your hamster’s sleep schedule is to encourage them to stay awake and play when they are already awake, not waking them up if they have fallen asleep. Hamsters are startled easily due to their poor eyesight, which means waking them up could trigger severe anxiety. If your hamster is awake at a time that suits your schedule and routine, take the opportunity to spend quality time together while encouraging them to stay awake longer. This could mean playing with them or giving them lots of affection if they are tame and like to be handled. This should be done gradually, keeping them awake just a little longer each day. As you encourage these changes, watch carefully for any signs of stress and anxiety, such as: Loss of appetite Refusing to drink water Increased vocalizationHiding constantly, especially during hours when they are usually activeLethargy or loss of energyFailing to chew and wear down their teeth, overgrown teethChewing at the cage bars Hair loss, bald spots, overgroomingObsessive behaviors like digging, scratching, or lickingUncharacteristic aggressionIf you notice any of these signs, take a step back. New Tool Detects and Predicts Dog Mobility Issues

Researchers at the University of Liverpool and experts at Dogs Trust have joined forces to create a unique new tool for detecting and predicting dog mobility issues. These veterinary experts have developed the GenPup-M questionnaire. This survey asks dog owners a series of questions to about their dog's mobility. The GenPup-M questionnaire is designed in a way that can help owners determine whether their dog might be experiencing mobility problems, even mild ones. Mobility-related problems are the third most commonly diagnosed disease in dogs. It’s estimated that 200,000 dogs are affected by musculoskeletal disease annually. According to some estimates, 20% of dogs have mobility issues before one year old, but most aren’t diagnosed until they are eight to 13 years old. Current mobility questionnaires are developed for dogs already diagnosed with mobility problems and track their quality of life. This means that many dogs spend the better part of their lives living with a painful condition that negatively impacts their overall health and well-being. A recent study, published in PLOS ONE confirms the validity of the GenPup-M questionnaire. The study involved 62 dogs - 31 with mobility issues and 31 without mobility issues.Scientists obtained the dogs’ clinical history from the owners, and all dogs received an orthopedic exam at the beginning of the study. Next, owners were asked to complete the GenPup-M questionnaire along with a previously validated mobility questionnaire.To determine the survey’s validity and its ability to identify mobility issues in dogs, scientists compared GenPup-M responses with the results of other expert tests, including advanced gait analysis.“Impaired mobility can affect a dog’s ability to engage in daily activities and interactions, move or exercise freely. If an animal is unwilling to or cannot play, exercise, or express normal behavior, this can impact its quality of life,” said Natasha Clark, veterinary surgeon and researcher at the Department of Musculoskeletal & Aging Science at the University of Liverpool. According to Clark, when done over time at regular checkups, the GenPup-M questionnaire can identify subtle changes in a dog’s mobility without the use of expensive and time-consuming gait analysis. This new tool can help vets diagnose and slow the development of mobility problems in dogs. “Our research doesn’t stop here and we will continue to research and develop GenPup-M to refine it as an even more effective tool for vets and dog caregivers,” added Clark.The Deputy Head of Research, Welfare Projects & Grants at Dogs Trust, Dr Jane Murray, said, “We are delighted to work collaboratively with the University of Liverpool on this study which serves to improve the well-being of dogs, as no dog is immune to mobility issues.
