We all need a friend when life throws us a curve ball and for many, that often comes in the shape of a furry, four-legged buddy with a wagging tail and a willingness to lend an ear and a cuddle on command.

But at a women’s safe house in central London, that much-needed emotional support comes in the shape of a feline named Marley. And he’s just been recognized as the National Cat of the Year in the UK.

You see, seven-year-old Marley’s history is not unlike the 11 women seeking refuge in this protective space. Adopted from a local rescue just four years earlier, Marley had been bullied by the other pets in his previous home. Though we don’t typically attribute empathy to felines, this may explain why Marley has such an innate ability to know where and how his services are needed. And just when to curl up and spend time with these women who have come from exploitive situations including enslavement and trafficking.

Now, the woman who runs Caritas Bakhita House, Karen Anstiss, felt that Marley was rather extraordinary at bringing comfort. "Often Marley is the first kindness they've experienced in years. He has this incredible gift of empathy and has assisted many, many women along the road to recovery."

When someone new arrives, the sensitive feline knows just how to introduce himself. He sits close to gauge their reaction and then places a paw on their leg to let them know he’s there for them and they’re not alone. One newcomer had been so traumatized in her previous life, that she would only speak with Marley, not the caregivers. This simple act of interaction helped her eventually open up to staff and gain the help she needed.

Of course, Marley’s busy schedule keeps him on his toes. He sits in therapy sessions, joins the crew for dinner each night, and naturally acts as house patrol, keeping the living space and grounds free from vermin.

And it’s because of all of the above that, rather than just throwing this heroic boy a few more treats, Anstiss decided to take it one step further and nominate Marley for England’s National Cat of the Year. A lofty endeavour, given the thousands of worthy felines put forth each year for this prestigious honour.

In short order, this handsome long-haired tuxedo made it into the finalist category alongside three other cats. Soon, he won in the Incredible Cats category that recognizes the one feline whose bond with their humans inspires extraordinary acts of love.

That was a public vote.

Then onto the panel of celebrity judges who ultimately chose Marley to hold the coveted overall National Cat of the Year title. Heading home with a smart little trophy and a 200£ (around $260) pet store voucher, this cat’s feeling quite chuffed with his new-found hero status. We agree, well done Marley!
